Personality:
My name is Odd Thomas, though in this age when fame is the alter at which most people worship, I'm not sure why you should care.
His name is Odd, not Todd or Dodd, but Odd and that pretty much sums up his life. The unusual is an expected part of the way things are and he’s okay with that, has accepted that a long time ago. Maybe as far back as childhood. He’s a fry cook with no larger ambition to be more than that. He’s a simple man, with simple needs, and the mundane aspects of an average life is something that he wants.
That, of course is because of one thing, he needs balance. And things have to be pretty simple to even out the fact that Odd can see the dead.
I am not afraid of Death. Course, I'm not ready to go on a date with him, either.
Odd lived at home with his parents until he was sixteen and if anybody asks him to describe his mother, they’ll get one word. Complicated. A woman diagnosed as psychotic for having a gift similar to his own, she was institutionalized by his father while he was young. He had a strained relationship with them both, which encouraged him to be independent, and more than that, taught him to be careful. Certain people, with certain kinds of minds, don’t like it when people are different than what’s normal. He kept his gifts from them, though he suspects that they knew anyways, and he’s cautious when sharing his abilities with others now that he’s older.
There's something about a dead man trying to get a laugh that just bugs me. Perhaps because it suggests that, even in death, we still have a pathetic need to be liked - as well as the ever-present ability to humiliate ourselves.
There are characteristic traits that most humans possess, that Odd hates. The need to be liked. The inability to go through a single day without humiliating themselves. He’s been fortunate in his life to have only succumbed to the latter a few times and usually as a means of distraction. The former, though, he doesn’t want anything to do with it. If people don’t like him for who he is then that’s that. There’s no reason to be fussed or to try harder or to change himself to become the screwed up and cut up version of what someone else wants. He’s who he is and he’s not about to change that for anyone else.
Fate is not a straight road. There are many forks in it. You have the free will to choose which one you take, but sometimes it will bend around and bring you straight back to that same stubborn fate.
Odd puts a lot of emphasis on free will, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know that free will is entirely subjective. You can make choices, decide where you want your life to go, but fate has a funny way of taking the choice from you and doing whatever the hell it wants. He’s not upset by that; it’s a fact that most people need to embrace and probably never will.
I may see dead people, but, by God, I do something about it.
Born with the ability to see dead people, Odd knew that he’d have to keep every part of his life as simple as possible in order to balance out the stranger side of it. His gifts. He’s a psychic that chose to do something about what he sees. People, even those that have passed on, deserve to be avenged, but he doesn’t think of himself as a vigilante. Just someone that knows his gift is to be used for something good. If he has a vision, he does something about it. If he has a weird dream that just might be the future, he does something about it. He uses a branch of his main abilities, psychic magnetism, to find people when they go missing, and he communicates with the dead even though he can only see and not hear them. The balance between the two is what keeps him level, and what allows him to stay sane.
Stormy always believed that life is not about how fast you run or with what degree of grace, that this life is a boot camp, that we must persevere through all the obstacles and hardships to earn our way into the next life.
Odd loves people. He likes to make them laugh and smile. He loves helping them. He likes cooking them pancakes and making them feel special. But he’s never loved anyone the way he loves Stormy. They had matching birthmarks and a gypsy mummy told them when they were kids that they would be together forever, which meant it had to be true. Stormy is the perfect woman, a complimentary personality. Strong and smart. She meant everything to him and he was going to spend the rest of his life loving her and showing her how special she was to him.
After losing her, he realized that what he didn’t get to accomplish in their lives together, he would now that she’s moved on without him. Odd doesn’t believe that he deserves the afterlife, a perfect world that they can spend eternity in together, so he’s going to do everything he can to make sure that when he dies, he did earn it. It drives him to succeed. It pushes him to be kind and helpful, respectful and determined. Odd helps the living and those that linger because it’s the only way that he can honor her memory and be true to himself.
That will be a long wait, but I am a patient man, and I have much to do.
Abilities/Skills:

↠ Psychic Magnetism: Sort of like a cosmic string that he can tug on, Odd can find another person, living or dead, no matter where they are just by concentrating on them.
↠ Cook: Anything you can find in a standard diner, Odd can make it and with flair.
↠ Athletic: In order to preserve his good looks, he learned how to handle himself. He can fight, take punches, run for long distances, and knows how to make on the spot judgments to help him beat his opponent.

[Odd's a patient man, he thinks, but the strange new device on his hand is begging to be used. Who is he to deny it anything when its asked so nicely?]
Hello, everybody. I'm Odd. [No, not Todd. Not Dodd, but Odd.] Odd Thomas.
[Now that that's out of the way.]
How do we switch jobs? Field medic? That's not really my thing. But if the ship needs a fry cook, I'm your guy.
[Apparently he's applying for a job over the network. Whatever, he had to do what he had to do.]
Can anyone help me with that?

There's something about a dead man trying to get a laugh that just bugs him. Perhaps because it suggests that, even in death, people still have a pathetic need to be liked - as well as the ever-present ability to humiliate themselves to make it happen.
Odd wasn't like that. He'd made sure that he wasn't. People could like him if they wanted to, but he wasn't going to change anything about himself to make it happen. So what if he stares too long at something only he can see. Who cares if he doesn't sleep much so he slinks around the ship late at night looking for something to do. He had quirks like the best of them and he was who he was and he wasn't going to alter himself to make people like him more.
But that didn't mean he didn't want people to like him at all. He loves people and all their idiosyncrasies. If they wanted to be around him because they didn't mind that he was unusual, then those were the people he needed in his life.
This ship, the Moira, was full of people that were just as weird or weirder than he was, and he was honestly pretty excited about that. It meant that the crew was used to the abnormal guys that stare too much and have strange abilities. These people were his kind of people.
People with gifts who didn't care what others thought of them.
Odd finally found a place where he didn't stand out and the only truly odd thing was that he had to go to outer space to find it.
